Virtual nurse program seeks to 'revolutionize' hospital care by Idowu Olabode : May 25, 2016, 08:03:41 PM
CHI Health Good Samaritan hospital staff are introducing a new hospital tool that health care officials say is more efficient and convenient for patients.

Patient rooms at the Kearney hospital are equipped with a video system that connects them to the "Virtually Integrated CareSM." A virtual nurse who sits in a command center on the first floor can talk with as many as 24 patients in the medical surgical unit with the push of a button.

"It's been really successful," virtual nurse, Jayme Weber, said of the system in place since April. "Patients have really appreciated, first, I think that the discharge times are quicker. And then second, just having someone there to answer their questions."

The virtual nurse can give patients their test results, answer questions and help with admissions and discharges.

The camera is right above the monitor in each patient room. It's never used to record anything and it's never turned on without the patient's permission.

But the techonology advancement also comes with a learning curve.

"I think the most challenging part is just getting used to the technology on my end," Weber added. "It's actually kind of a benefit to not be in the room. It helps to keep me focused on the patient and I don't have to be pulled away by other patients."

The program was made possible with a three-year, $1.45 million grant from the Health Resources Services Administration.

"The ultimate goal is improvement in quality care for the patients, improving patient satisfaction and also nurse and provider satisfaction which is increased communication between the staff and having included the virtual nurse in the huddle, as well," said Megan Uphoff, the nursing director.
