Nigeria: FG forecasts N211b savings in healthcare delivery from National Health by Idowu Olabode : December 18, 2014, 02:56:13 AM
The Federal Government of Nigeria has forecasted over N211 billion savings in the next ten years through a full implementation of the newly signed National Health Act.

About N17 billion in healthcare is expected in 2015.

Speaking at a stakeholders' meeting in Abuja, the Supervising Minister of Health, Dr Khaliri Alhassan said, “Individuals and families will have more disposable income through reduction in catastrophic health expenditure occasioned by very high cost of out of pocket expenditure when the mandatory social health insurance scheme that will be supported by the Act is implemented.

“The Act provides for a minimum package of essential health services for all citizens to guarantee a more productive life and will impact positively on infant, child and maternal mortality rates which currently are highly unacceptable at 69 and 66 per cents respectively.”

He described the Act as the most  critical element in the  transformation ofthe health sector; stressing that "the  multiplier effects of this will holistically manifest in increased life expectancy of Nigerians, as well as increased productivity. It is the one singular instrument required to unlock economicgoodness and health to Nigerians."

He also explained that apart from the provision of additional funding, the Act guaranteed fairness in the allocation of resources or treatment of outcomes among different individuals and allow Nigerians to obtain the best possible value for the resources used.

Also, the Health Sector Reform Coalition, Executive Secretary, Health Reform Foundation of Nigeria (HERFON), Dr. Muhammed Lecky, described the signing of the bill as a legacy achievement by the present administration.

He said the full implementation of the Act will also save lives of 3 million women and children over a five-year period.
