Achievers varsity introduces vocational training for students; set to start Nursing degree by katty : December 09, 2014, 07:38:04 AM
Achievers University, Owo has concluded plans to introduce vocational training for its students beginning from 100 level.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Samuel Ibiyemi, told journalists that the programme would prepare its students for the economic realities of the future and guarantee their self reliance.

He said the programme was unique to the university, as it is thefirst of its kind in Nigeria.

He said students would take some day off their academic activities ona weekly basis to learn a vocation, which could be completely outside their main field of study.

Prof. Ibiyemi who also spoke against the backdrop of the commencement of the school’s 4thconvocation ceremony, said a total of 581 students would be graduating, out of which 31 bagged first class honours.

According to him,  295 got second class upper, 239 are in the second class lower division, while 16 got third class.

He boasted that graduates from Achievers have the competences to compete effectively in the Nigerian labour market.

Ibiyemi noted that due to the fact that institution could not meet up with the capacity giving by the National Universities Commission, for students’ admission, the institution had decided to add seven courses to its programmes.

The courses include Nursing, Mass Communication, Sociology, Criminology, Physiology and Public Administration.

He  noted that the university was expecting the NUC accreditation team to inspect the facilities already put in place for the take off of the courses.
