The Demand and Number of Male Nurses in the Work Place is Rising by katty : March 06, 2019, 06:00:36 PM
Nursing is a profession that many people associate with women. That being said there is also a high demand for males in this profession. In past years the demand for male nurses in the profession has been there, but this year the demand is even higher. Nursing is a profession that would benefit greatly from a better diversification of gender.

Currently, the American Association of Men in Nursing (AAMN) is campaigning for a 20% increase in male nurses in the workforce by the year 2020. So what makes male nurses so special? In some cases patients prefer a nurse of a certain gender, a male patient may not be comfortable with a female nurse performing certain procedures. Likewise, a female patient may not feel comfortable with a male nurse performing the same procedures.

When nursing first became a profession, there was an overwhelming influx of women to the profession with very few, if any, men that were interested. Men were seen as the doctor rather than the nurse and as such many men shied away from the nursing profession. Many thought of nursing as a woman’s profession for the simple fact that there was care such as changing sheets, changing bandages, and giving medicine and food involved. These days the barriers are being broken and more and more men are becoming a part of this loving and truly special profession.

Male nurses have all the same skills that female nurses exhibit but certain patients may be more comfortable with a nurse of their own gender. Similarly, in some cases female nurses are not physically large enough to move patients while a male nurse can move them more easily. Male nurses have the ability and desire to provide the same level of care, the same bedside manner, and the same skill set that female nurses offer.

Male nurses have the ability to be professionals that are able to provide care to patients in their own unique way. With a call for more male nurses, there is also a bigger need for male scrubs to help those nurses look and feel professional. Nursing professionals need scrubs to not only look the part, but also to protect themselves and patients. Nurses are a critical part of our society and now, more men than ever are realizing that it is a truly fantastic and rewarding profession.
