UK: Nurse and Midwife of the Year 2017 awards open for nominations by Idowu Olabode : February 20, 2017, 09:24:29 AM
If you have experienced outstanding care from a nurse or midwife and would like to pay tribute to them now is the time to speak up.

The Nurse and Midwife of the Year Awards 2017 will highlight the very best care and compassion of the city's healthcare staff - and we want to hear from you about your experiences.

The Post has once again teamed up with Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust, and our sponsors Nottingham Express Transit (NET) - which runs the city's tram network - to celebrate the tireless efforts of our nurses and midwives.

Nominations have opened for this year's awards, which are set to be bigger and better than ever.

Nominations will be open until Sunday, March 19. A panel of experts will then narrow the entries down to three shortlisted entrants in each category, before a public vote decides the winner.

The shortlisted finalists will then be invited to a glittering awards ceremony held on Thursday, May 18, at Nottingham Conference Centre.

Staff nurse Aprille Jones was crowned the overall winner at last year's ceremony, as well as being named International Nurse of the Year.

At the time, Aprille, who was honoured for her work at the theatre recovery ward at Queen's Medical Centre, said: "I am very happy, I feel honoured to have this award.

"I was already thrilled to be a finalist but to have actually won the award is overwhelming. I can't really speak, I am just so excited.

"It's such a great feeling. It's such a rewarding job. All the hard work has paid off. To know that someone is watching and recognising what we do, I really appreciate that."

Josh Downey, of Bestwood, won the Midwife of the Year awards at last year's ceremony. The 26-year-old works on the Bonington Ward at Nottingham City Hospital and urged people to nominate for this year's celebration.

He said: "I think it's a great thing for NUH and The Post to collaborate on. It's nice to be appreciated for what we do. If you feel like the person who has given you care has gone above and beyond, and you've felt a strong affinity to them, you should get in touch and vote.

"It's so nice to be recognised for what we do. It was a nice boost. You may not think your care is that exceptional - you give the same care to everybody - but it's nice to realise that some people really do appreciate it."

Jamie Swift, NET's head of marketing, said: "This is our fourth successive year of supporting these awards and we're proud to be involved in a scheme that highlights the absolutely crucial and caring role our city's nurses and midwives play within our community.

"We already have strong links with NUH which will no doubt be further strengthened when the new direct walkway from the Queen's Medical Centre to our dedicated hospital tram stop opens later this year.

"As in previous years, the overall winner of the 2017 Nottingham Nurse of the Year Award will also receive the honour of having a tram named after them for the next 12 months."

The award catergories are:

Children's Nurse of the Year – A nurse, employed by NUH, who works with patients aged 18 and under

Midwife of the Year – A midwife, employed by NUH (based in QMC, City Hospital or in the community)
