RN-BSC Nursing in the UK: A do it yourself guide by Idowu Olabode : December 03, 2014, 11:34:06 AM
Hello great Nurses,I opened this thread for Nurses who may want to complete their university undergraduate degree program in the UK.

This thread is a "Do it yourself" thread that empowers you to act on your own without going through any agent.

This is going to be an interactive thread where you ask a question and other nurses who are experienced in your issue provide the answer.

For Nigeria nurses who have successfully studied in the UK,you can drop the step by step approach and timelime of your application process, tips, school, tuition, cost of living and any associated cost.

Thanks.

Hi,good one.

Let me start by letting the house know that nursing in the UK for nurses with 3years diploma certificate is 1year program. If you want to register with nursing and midwifery council of UK, you add between 3-6 months to that depending on the institution.

The most popular university in UK for Nigerian nurses are:
-Anglia Ruskin university
-University of Sunderland
-Nottingham university
-King's College

For most top up programs, the tuition is usually between 7,500 to 10,500 pounds.

Requirements:
1. Transcript from nursing school
2. IELTS score of 6.0 point but most schools don't mandate you to provide this if you are from Nigeria.
3. Reference(s)

Admission is usually twice a year -January and September.

Thanks Katty for that.

University of Sunderland and Anglia don't request ielts score from Nigerians but one needs to sit for the English exam and have at least 7.0 in each band if one plans to register with UK nursing and midwifery council.

Welcome Idowu, you are right.

For any nurse who is interested in the top up program, simply follow the following steps:
-Research the schools you are interested in and choose the best based on your findings and tuition fees.
-Contact the school admission office or international office department and ask questions or clarify issues.
-Start your application process by filling online form and uploading your documemts (you can do this by registering with individual schools or through UCAS).
-Wait for admission decision
-If admitted, pay part payment of your tuition for CAS to be issued to you.
-Proceed to lodge your visa application at the British embassy in Lagos and go for your medical
-Work to secure your accommodation.
-Obtain your visa, book your flight and arrange your documents for departure.

NB: Your student visa limits you to work for 20hours per week when school is in session.

Really? If you have credit in your English O level result and your admission statement or essay is written in good English, then you would be exempted from writing IELTS.  It's actually easy to get the band needed for admission but getting 7.0 in each band for those interested in ONP is not easy.

@Idowu, do you think someone can still make January admission in the UK especially this Conventry of yours?  I just assisted a friend to fill and submit the application.

It depends on several factors. If his/her  tuition and maintenance fees are already available and the school resumes by January ending,s/he can  make it if offered admission this week.

The cost depends on the  tuition you are to pay (some schools offer discounts) and the exchange exchange rate as at the time you are paying.  It's #283 per pound today and it can be higher or lower than that tomorrow.

Hello,uk schools are flexible in their admission policies and since you have complete O level when you combine your GCE with NECO,most schools will definitely accept it.

On your second question, I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Can you be more explicit?

Sorry for the late reply, the tuition is still valid but schools might review this for the next intake

For Conventry university the tuition is now £10,766 nothing has changed for the school visit http://www.coventry.ac.uk/course-structure/2015/faculty-of-health-and-life-sciences/undergraduate/nursing-bsc-hons-top-up/

Although IELTS of overall band score of 6.5 is required with no band less than 6.0  I'm not sure if it will be adhered to cos in the paste it has always been waved for Nigeria.
