Great Nigerian Nurses!!..  :D GREAT!!  8)

I would like to use this medium to share my  journey and experience as a Nigerian nurse aiming to be registered as a nurse in USA.  Please feel free to comment and bring up suggestions as i share my step to step guide to nursing registration abroad.  No man is an island of knowledge.

As we all know or must have heard, nurses are paid very well in USA, the opportunities, possibilities  and career growth is endless and if you are ambitious like me,  you would have thought of relocating too.  if you have,  then i have good news for you, it's not as hard and complicated as it seems if you follow the right steps.

You don't need any agent to assist you with your nursing registration, you can do it yourself.  I repeat,  YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF.

Now enough with this chatter and let's start already.

To register as a nurse in USA you have to first of all decide on the state you want to work in, I'm not going to give the pros and cons of each state because this post is about my personal journey so I'm going to be limited to what I did and didn't do.

I decided to choose the state of Texas because in my opinion the Texas Board of nursing is not as strict to foreign nurses when compared to some other states.  For example, they don't require English exams, they are customer friendly, they take their time to respond and answer all your questions. I know this because i took a long time to research and arrive at this conclusion.  Moreover working as a nurse in Texas also has its benefits like no income taxes, it's a compact state and most of its population are black.  I'm not racist but i figured being in a new country with no friends and family close by it would be comforting to see more blacks around you.  :o

After choosing a state, the next step is to register with CGFNS

This can be done at www.cgfns.org
Take note that the application fee is $350.

*What type of CES report would you like? Choose professional report if your aim is to register with a state Board of Nursing,  get licensed and start working.  Choose Academic report  if your aim is to send the report to a university where you want to further your studies or upgrade to a Bsn.  I  chose the former.

If you picked professional report then read on,  if not then this is where our journey ends for those choosing the academic route.

Re: My Journey to Nursing Registration in Texas, USA: A Guide for Nigerian Nurses by Royalty : August 25, 2016, 12:39:29 PM
*CES report type:   Professional Report

*What type of license are you applying for?:  Registered Nurse.  (you cannot use two stones to kill a bird here like for Canadian registration where you can choose both LPN  and RN.  It's either you pick lpn or RN.  I had to deliberate for a long time before finally going for RN because I was thinking  "what if my credentials are not equivalent to RN, wouldn't it be better to pick lpn so that my money won't be wasted?)  But after many calls to cgfns and emails to Texas Bon,  I was advised to go for RN.  :) ;)just in case you were thinking the same thing :o ;)

*Have you already passed the NCLEX exam?: No
*for Recipient #1Are you applying for Licensure in the US?:   Yes
*State Board of Nursing:   TEXAS BOARD OF NURSE EXAMINERS. ( you can choose more than one state but additional charges apply.  I choose just Texas.)
*My recipient is on the list above:   Yes

Click on the SUBMIT  button
It will lead you to the cgfns connect  service purchase wizard. Click on next to begin the 12 steps of your application.
This will be coming a few hours later.  My hand hurts so much from typing Thanks for reading and don't forget  to check for updates

Thumbs up to idowu for creating this forum. It's high time nurses learn to look out for each other.

THANK YOU FOR THE EXPLANATION ON YOUR JOURNEY TO NURSING REGISTRATION IN TEXAS.

Pls what is the average duration from start to finish to get registered with the Nurses board of texas?

Re: My Journey to Nursing Registration in Texas, USA: A Guide for Nigerian Nurses by Idowu Olabode : August 25, 2016, 06:18:46 PM
Excellent one @Royalty and thanks so much for volunteering to share your application experience and timelime with us. For others the summary are:
1.   Research the state you are planning to move to and check out the Board of Nursing requirements for foreign/overseas educated nurse and determine your eligibility
2.   Meet the requirements and apply to the BON
3.   Send the required documents and meet the Authorization to Test (ATT)
4.   Register, sit and pass NCLEX
5.   Migrate
For Texas Nursing Board, here are the requirements:
-   CES course-by-course report which can come from CGFNS www.cgfns.org or ERES www.eres.com or IERF www.ierf.org according to https://www.bon.texas.gov/pdfs/forms_pdfs/examination_pdfs/RNExam2014.pdf
-   Verification of license from your nursing board e.g NMCN
-   Proof of English (but if you finished from a country where your nursing course was taught in English you will be exempted)
-   Criminal background check (Fingerprint check)
-   Application form with application fees of $100
-   Writing online nursing jurisprudence exam (an open book exam)
-   Receive Authorization To Test
-   Book, sit for NCLEX-RN exam
Please cross-check @Royalty and let me know whether I am right. Seems CES service of CGFNS has been increased to $385

@Wale: I think that mightbe  difficult to predict because of so many  variables e.g your school might send your transcript late, nursing council might not respond or send your documents early, etc

THANK YOU FOR THE EXPLANATION ON YOUR JOURNEY TO NURSING REGISTRATION IN TEXAS.

Pls what is the average duration from start to finish to get registered with the Nurses board of texas?
Your question has been answered perfectly by idowu.  I can't say the average duration now cause im still in the process.  3 months counting already but everything should be ready within 1 year as long as you prevent unnecessary delays on your part.

STEP 11: DOCUMENT PRINTING

In this step, you have to print out the necessary forms that would be sent to your school of nursing and nursing council. They include

*CES APPLICATION: This is just for your records

*REQUEST FOR ACADEMIC TRANSCRIPTS:
Print out this form, fill in the first part of it which is the applicant section on capital letters.  You must not make a mistake on the form so just to be safe print out about 2 to 4 copies incase you make a spelling error.  After filling your part, put it in a brown envelope  and take it to your school personally.

*REQUEST FOR VALIDATION OF LICENSE :
Print out this form, fill out your part and take it to Nursing council.
I am insisting you take it yourself to the appropriate authorities to avoid delays.  When you get there,  insist they use a courier service and be ready to pay a few extra money on it. I didn't do this and my credentials took a longer time to be sent through the post office as opposed to someone else who got hers delivered to cgfns within 4 days.  Remember,
Remember you have just 1 year to complete your cgfns Evaluation so if you have a chance speed up the process don't hesitate.

Below is the attached forms in pdf format

MAY 13TH 2016:
I RECEIVED MY CGFNS ID NUMBER

MAY 14TH 2016
: I went to Nursing and midwifery council in Abuja to submit the license validation form which i printed out.  Fill only the first part.  Make sure you sign in the signature column and don't make the mistake of writing your name there instead because your form will be rejected.  Include your cgfns Id number in your form.  Go with photocopies of your license,  school of nursing certificate, notification letter, birth certificate and passport just in case. You will fill a form and be asked to pay 8,750 naira into the nursing council TSA account but you can ask the man to help you generate the code and pay on your be half using his laptop instead of going to the bank yourself. He will ask you to pay him extra 1000 as his workmanship.  ;D   Total amount you will spend will total  9,750 naira.  Don't forget to request that it should be sent through courier service.

MAY 16TH 2016:  I took the request for transcript form to my school of Nursing after filling my part of course.  You will be asked to pay for both the transcript and courier service.  The amount varies with different schools.  DO NOT POST THE DOCUMENTS YOURSELF TO CGFNS you might make a mistake by using your own address instead of the school address.

MAY 16TH 2016
: I also sent my secondary school certificate myself to cgfns.  This should be the only document coming from the applicant.  It's optional but i sent it anyway.

Hello thanks for this update. I finished general nursing in 1999 and I have been afraid that my credentials may not be equivalent to US standard. Presently I am doing my RN - BNSc to finish 2017. Do you think my old RN cert will be equivalent to US standard or I should wait until I finish my BNSc. I also have ICU and midwifery. So no need to add them. Thanks please for your time.

I honestly don't know if our RN certificate is equivalent to US standard until my report is issued. I think the best thing is finish your bsn first before you apply to cgfns that way you have a better chance of meeting their requirements.

hello house please i need clarification on the two years evidence of working experience required by texas board of nursing as i saw on their website i dunno if its still needed if @royalty sent that too because its not stated in this analysis and not listed in the mail sent to me.thanks
I sent two years working experience.  If you graduated within the last 4 years and you don't have the 2 years experience then there is no problem You can write Nclex.  If you did not graduate within the last 4 years and you don't have the working experience then you have to do a refresher course first before writing nclex.  Check out the attached pdf file for more clarification.
...wow thank you this is so good thank you for this i graduated in november 2013 that means i do not really need to send them the working experience.

yes.  The equivalent of $350 will be withdrawn from your account. You will receive the alert in naira format.

the delay is from nursing Council here,  cgfns Is requesting for additional documents and it has to come directly from NMC.  This happened because of a mistake i made and it's proving hard  to correct.  My application would have changed Status to work in progress since last month if not for this issue.  Its still in awaiting required documents.

Re: My Journey to Nursing Registration in Texas, USA: A Guide for Nigerian Nurses by Goldiena : September 28, 2016, 09:40:28 PM
When you get the email from autoreplycgfns,  click on the verification  link and it will take you back to the cgfns connect page.  Now put in your username and password and log into your account.

*upload your passport sized photo online.  I didn't.

*Click on purchase services from cgfns international
Read the service wizard information and click on Begin selection process

* cgfns id number finder :  click on I am a new user and have not used CGFNS or any of its affiliates before.

*CGFNS Connect Service Purchase Wizard
Now answer the following questions as it applies to you.

*Are you a nurse?:  Yes
*What is the country of your entry level nursing education?:  Nigeria
*Do you have or have you ever held a registration or license issued by the respective authorities from the country where entry level nursing education was completed? :  Yes

*Select a service
Choose credentials evaluation service (CES). For Texas and other states except New York.
Or Credentials verification service(CVS)  for New York state only. (the pathophysiology of New york state registration is totally different from other states. Please do not apply my experience if you are registering with new york)

*CES RECIPIENTS
*What type of CES report would you like? Choose professional report if your aim is to register with a state Board of Nursing,  get licensed and start working.  Choose Academic report  if your aim is to send the report to a university where you want to further your studies or upgrade to a Bsn.  I  chose the former.

Wait for the page to refresh itself so that the other questions following your chosen report will come up.
If you picked professional report then read on,  if not then this is where our journey ends for those choosing the academic route.
hello, thanks @Royalty for these post. Its so helpful but I have a little bit of problem with my registration. Under Select Service, CGFNS Certification Program (CP) and the US state im applying to does not accept this, so i was wondering if its possible to edit that from my application. thanks in anticipation.

STEP 10:  ORDER SUMMARY

Write out your order number in a safe place.
Total amount for the above CES professional report is $350
Review your order then Click NEXT.

I got my CGFNS ID No already and I downloaded the Request form for the Validation of license and Request for academic transcript but I also got two additional forms and I dont know what to do with them after filling. *AUTHORIZATION TO RELEASE INFORMATION Form and CGNFNS Program For Registered Nurses (which is showing everything i filled)...Please help shed more light on this. Thanks again.

You don't need to send the authorization to release form and the cgfns program.  Just send the request for academic transcript and license validation form only.  I think there is a box where you are supposed to tick yes in that authorization to release form online.  Tick the box and Click Next.  There was no need to print it out.

it is not only Texas.  Check Google to know about other states that don't need it. I saw it one-time but can't seem to locate it now.

Re: My Journey to Nursing Registration in Texas, USA: A Guide for Nigerian Nurses by Desmond : March 21, 2017, 06:10:44 AM
Someone sent this to me

I've taken my time to read through what must people have put so far, and I must say they're commendable. Permit me to say a little I know about Nurse's transition to the US, Canada, and Australia. Of the three countries, the US has the least requirement for English language proficiency.

The US requirement for IELTS exam is Speaking 7.0, and overall average score of 6.5, while Canada and Australia, you must have 7 in speaking, reading, writing and listening. There's no short cut for that.

To the best of my knowledge, passing the IELTS/TOEFL exam is the most excruciating and challenging hurdles that most Nigerian Nurses fear to face, and lest I forget, you MUST pass either of these exams in order to obtain a Visascreen after sitting for either nclex-RN exam or the CGFNS exam.

Never mind, let me go straight to the point. If you a Nigerian Nurse that intends or has an intent to migrate to the US to practice, this is what you need to do before contacting any recruitment agency.

1. Have an international passport for yourself and family members who are less than 21 years of age (i.e if you are married).
2. Have your nursing diploma/degree evaluated by the CGFNS.( this can take up to one year or less)
3. Sit and pass either IELTS or TOEFL exams.
4. Contact a recruitment agency.

Someone would ask, how did you know all these? Ok, let me tell how, my wife is a registered nurse, she has her RN from one of the nursing schools in Enugu state, had her RM and BSN from University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Yes, she did her CGFNS CES report and choose Florida board as h the state she would like to practice, and the report says her basic RN is comparable to the completion of a first -level general (Registered) nurse diploma program in the United States while, her BSC/BSN from UNN is comparable to the completion of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in the United States. She started the process in October 2015 and the report was issued on September 2016. You see, it took almost 1 year to achieve that. Mind you, her transcripts were sent from both the basic nursing school and also from UNN. This project requires both time, calls and finances.

IELTS, the nightmare exam. I called it nightmare because my wife never like the exam. You know what? She had to sit for this exam 3 times, yes you heard me right, 3 times. The first time was on the 19 June, 2016 and her scores were Listening 7.5, reading 7.5, writing 7.5 and speaking 6.5. The second time was in November 19, 2016 and her scores were, listening 7, reading 6, writing 7.5 and speaking 6.5. In fact, on the second time she cried when she went for her result because she thought she did well. Now the third time was on the 11 February, 2017 and she made Listening 6.5, reading 6.0, writing 6.0 and speaking 7.0. Whao at last she made it, and met the US IELTS english requirement of Speaking 7.0 and overall band score of 6.5.

Recruitment agency, as it stands now, the agency that accepts Nigerian nurses in the USA that I know are Passport USA, Avant healthcare professional and O'grady Peyton international. As for Passport USA, they can only assist if you've written and passed either CGFNS exam or Nclex-rn exam, while Avant and O'grady peyton will not only accept you but would also help you to prepare for the Nclex-rn exam on one condition.

What's the condition? You will be tested/given a pre-screening exam for both english language proficiency(when you applied without english result) and basic nursing questions. When you pass the tests, a skype interview will be set up to ascertain your clinical experience and skills. If you are successful, a contract will be sent to you to sign and other things follow.

In the contract, Avant says you will work for them for 3 years while O'grady peyton says 2 years. Of course, the class of visa that will be issued to you and your immediate family if you are married is EB3 visa which is a green card.

My wife is presently with O'grady Peyton international after passing

Please is it true that I will still need IELTS even if I'm not going through any agency @Royalty?

Look for someone with domiciliary account or dollar denominated card to help you in making the payment while you pay the person the naira equivalence. Alternatively, look for people residing outside Nigeria to help you with the payment
