This is a step by step guide on nmc overseas nurses registration. You will find information about nmc requirements for overseas nurses, nmc overseas nurses exam,CBT among others.

The nursing and midwifery council UK is the centralized agency that controls the registration, practice and upholding of standard of nursing in England,Wales,Scotland and Northern Ireland.

This guide is made by Nurses arena dot com solely as a guide for registered nurses in Nigeria who may seek to pursue registration with the UK nursing and midwifery council board in order to be able to practice in any part of UK.

Nurses Arena dot com observed that the previous registration procedure for nurses who are trained outside the European Union countries has changed. Nurses who intend to pursue registration with NMC need to follow the guidelines and steps outlined below.

Before you proceed with the steps,Note that you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

1. Language

You must have at least 7.0 in each aspect of IELTS with an average band score of at least 7.0.

Update : Under the previous system applicants were required to achieve the IELTS Academic Test Level 7 in reading, writing, speaking and listening in a single sitting. Under the new protocols the NMC still requires applicants to achieve Level 7 in all areas, but this can now be achieved over two sittings of the tests. Both tests must be within six months of each other and no single score must be below 6.5 in any of the areas across both tests.

2. Education Requirements

You must have had at least 3years of nursing education. You are required to have 10years of education before your nursing studies.

3. Practice Requirements

You are required to have at least 12months of full time or part time equivalent work experience.

4. Registration Requirements

You must hold an active registration with the nursing and midwifery council of Nigeria. Your registration must have no restrictions placed on it.

NOTE:  UK NMC has 4 registration fields which are; Adult nursing, mental health nursing, learning disability nursing and children nursing.

As a single qualified nurses in Nigeria, your application should come under Adult Nursing.

STEP 2

TEST OF COMPETENCE -PART ONE

Once you have passed the eligibility assessment stage (the above step) then you will need to sit for a computer based exam. The exam is a multiple choice one that you can take right here in Nigeria!

Pearson VUE (http://pearsonvue.com/nmc/) administers the exam on behalf of the NMC UK thus the exam is available worldwide including Nigeria. Pearson VUE has testing partners in Lagos (Meridian Technologies Capital Building 332, Ikorodu Road By Idiroko Bus Stop, Maryland Lagos 23401 Nigeria) and Kaduna (Emerging Trees Limited 5 Keffi Road, Behind Bank PHB near Danbo International School Barnawa Kaduna 7064 Nigeria ) where Nigeria nurses can take the test. You can visit Pearson website for list of other African countries where you can take this test https://www9.pearsonvue.com/testtaker/registration/SelectTestCenterProximity/NMC/257740?_e_pi_=7%2CPAGE_ID10%2C6246458502

You have two attempts to pass the test and if you fail twice you will have to wait until six months later before you can retake the test. If you pass, then your result will be sent to the NMC UK and you will be invited to progress to the next stage.

Note that the CBT cost £130 (below #40,000).

- A valid passport.
-Birth certificate
-Your qualification certificate
-Registration certificate from Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
-2 employment references confirming that you have the 12months experience in competent and character
-Verification of registration from Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria

STEP 4 TEST OF COMPETENCE - PART TWO

After successful assessment, you will be invited for the second competency test. This is a test of clinical competence;  the format is Objective Structured Clinical Examination commonly referred to as OSCE.

For this part of the test,nursesarena.com gathered that you will have to travel to UK to take the test. This is because the University of Northampton is the only university allowed to conduct the exam.

You will rotate through 6 stations and answer questions (you will be asked to carry out practical demonstrations and answer questions as you rotate the stations). The exam cost £992 (Like #280,000 depending on the exchange rate ) For more information about this test visit http://www.northampton.ac.uk/Pages/NMC-Test-of-competence.aspx

STEP 5 ID CHECK

This is face-to-face Identity check where your identity will be confirmed.  Your picture will be taken and all your ORIGINAL documents which you have earlier submitted will be checked.

This can be done at the venue of the OSCE exam or later at the London Office of Nursing and Midwifery Council, UK.

Upon successful completion of part two competency exam, you will be invited to complete the final declaration and payment for your registration pin; this can be done online. The registration fees cost £133 (like #37,000) and renewable annually.

The total amount of money required to process your application (excluding IELTS fees, mailing, license verification in your country, travel, hotel booking etc) is £1395 (like #400,000).

If you have any question, sign in with your username and password and click on reply to drop your questions and comments.

The questions are copyrighted and are not to be disclosed openly. Read the NMC guidelines, policy statements and the blueprint on Nice website  www.nice.org.uk/guidancewww.londonccn.nhs.uk/page.asp?fldArea=2&fldMenu=3&fldSubMenu=1&fldKey=228 will help alot. You can also get this book Royal Marsden hospital manual for clinical nursing procedures  but not necessary. You also have access to 5 questions in your  Pearson account once you register for the CBT, you can also review NCLEX-RN exam past questions to refresh your knowledge on med surg and nursing care. Visit the exam section of this page to download those books free  http://nursesarena.com/exams/
Hope that helps?

Just concentrate on the NMC code, guidelines, and standards of medicine management. You can also read the other publications on the NMC website. As for the medsurg part, other people suggest you read The Royal Marsden Manual. But personally, I did not make use of it. It's your choice if you want to read it. Another tip is that if you encounter an unfamiliar question, always incorporate patient safety and rules on nursing delegation.I already did the exam and passed and it was so easy.

Thanks for this great deal of information freely shared. I stumbled upon this website while searching for the requirements for Nurse registration in uk. I have few questions

1. How long does it take before one can complete the whole process if one starts now because I learnt that nursing has been included in the skill shortage list and might be removed in February 2016.

2. How much do you think all will cost assuming I passed all the exams at a glance (including the flight ticket, hotel Lodge etc)

3. Where can one buy that book Royal Marsden you talked about or download online if possible.

4. Can one apply for the Tier 2 visa without NMC registration?  Learnt that it's whooping 30 points for nurses.

Please help I need answers. Thanks.

1. It depends on several factors e.g have you registered and passed the IELTS?  It takes time before you get school to send your transcript, Council to verify your registration etc so it's difficult to say how long exactly the processing can take.  It's not true that nursing will be removed from the skill shortage list in February 2016,what I have read about it is that decision will be made whether to include it permanently or not.

2. Cost?  Hmmm I can't give an exact figure but you should be aware that you will pay the following fees:
Application for nursing/midwifery £140
Part 1 test of competence (CBT) £130
Part 2 test of competence (OSCE) £992
Admission onto the register £153
Total £1415 and 1pound is slightly above #600 (as at February 4,2017)  Ielts cost 40k,transcript and nursing Council of Nigeria verification also has cost implications.

3. I'm not sure where you can get it in Nigeria but you can easily get it online on Amazon.com and ship it down to Nigeria. You can download the digital copy free of charge on our examination page
http://nursesarena.com/exams/

4. I'm not sure

hi.. I am a nurse working in Middle east for two years now, I am processing my NMC application by myself, which means no agency involved. I am scheduled to take my CBT March next year... I am just wondering and have few questions...

1. for test two.. if blessed enough, I passed the test 1, completed all the papers and NMC gave me a schedule to take the osce, should I resign from my work to go to UK?
2.once I pass the OSCE, how many months or weeks or days will it take for me to have the PIN?
3. once i have the PIN, can i work immediately?
4. and... there were some applicants that once they received their DL from NMC, they can go to UK to work already? how true was that?

H @iampreciousrn, please you said you were authorised to take the test immediately bt how come you are taking it in March, where you the one that chose March or they gave you? And do you need your ielts score for the eligibility self assessment stage ie the stage before the cbt? Thanks

the first thing you should do is take ielts exam, then, you can create an account in NMC website, you will fill up some online forms and they will ask your serial number in ielts... after that, they will give you a response saying you are authorize to take the exam, they will give you 6mos to take the exam

Evn tho you said dey will give you 6months to write the exam, and secondly I am about to write th ielts, should I authorise british council to send my result directly to NMC or I should just write the exam then give them my serial number and that's all? Thanks in advance

Hello @iamprecious, i believe all your questions are answered in this post please read this post as it seems to provide answers and clarity to some of your questions if not all http://nursesarena.com/travel-nursing/uk-nurse-inclusion-on-occupation-shortage-list-implication-for-overseas-nurses/#lastPost

Also hope you are aware that the waiting period after the submission of your documents is usually between 30-90 working days before you receive the approval email for OSCE? Things seem to have changed a bit since i published this post and will try to review it soon to reflect the changes. Can you share your experience so far? I mean the documents you submitted and how long it took you to get them from the parties concerned 'cos i believe that sharing that might help other applicants. Cheers.

One is certificate of registration from nursing and midwifery council of Nigeria which was given to you in your nursing school while the other one is verification of your license from Nursing and Midwifery Council. It is only processed in Abuja but you can submit your application to the Lagos office in Yaba it will be sent from there to Abuja and it will be sent to UK from there when it is ready.

Good day, I have some foreseed problem regarding my passed documents at NMC. When I checked my certificate of admission given by our school's registrar (which I passed at The regulatory body of our country) it bears a wrong date of commenced of my college degree. The problem is the regulatory body will indicate the wrong date on my verification.. this is incongruent with my school papers from my college...
Will my papers be kicked back?
Do I have to secure verification from my regulatory body again?
Pls advise. Thank u

Well I think you should get a letter from your school stating that your license with Nursing Council isn't ready yet and that it takes an average of X years before certificates are ready hence notification was issued by NMCN to serve same purpose before the original certificate is released and that the notification should be used in place of certificate.  Make sure it is sent directly from the school with the school seal,  it might be reckoned with (my opinion)
