Here is the English language requirement for AHPRA Nursing registration :

You can meet ahpra English language requirement by any of these three Pathways

Primary language pathway

If you grew up and completed all of your education in Australia,you meet the English language requirement through the primary pathway


Extended education pathway


If you have completed at least five years (full-time equivalent) education in English in a recognised country, you meet the standard through the extended education pathway, provided that you can provide evidence of at least:
*two years (for registered nurses), or
*one year (for enrolled nurses)
in a full-time equivalent pre-registration program of study approved by the recognised nursing and/or midwifery regulatory body in any of the recognised countries.

If your qualification as a health practitioner was not taught and assessed in English in one of the recognised countries, you will need to demonstrate that you meet the standard through the English language test pathway.
The recognised countries are:
Australia
Canada
New Zealand
Republic of Ireland
South Africa
United Kingdom, or
United States of America.


English language test pathway
Others can demonstrate they meet the English language requirement by sitting for any of the English language proficiency test below and obtaining the minimum stipulated score.

1. IELTS Academic Module


Minimum overall score of 7 and a minimum score of 7 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking,you can combine 2 results.

If combining scores from two sittings, the following is required:

*The two exam sittings are within a 6-month period
*Both exams achieved a minimum overall score of 7
*There are no components in the two exams with a score lesser than 6.5
*By using the two exam results you will have a minimum score of 7.0 in all components

2. OET (Registered Nurses version)


Minimum score of B in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking). You can equally combine 2 results.

If combining scores from two sittings, the following is required:

*The two exam sittings are within a 6-month period
*All four components were tested for the two exams taken
*There are no components in the two exams with a score lower than C
*By using the two exam results you will have a minimum score of B in all components

3. PTE Academic


Minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking). You can combine two results

If combining scores from two sittings, the following is required:

*The two exam sittings are within a 6-month period
*Both exams achieved a minimum overall score of 65
*There are no components in the two exams with a score lower than 58
*By using the two exam results you will have a minimum score of 65 in all communicative skills

4. TOEFL iBT


Minimum total score of 94 and the following minimum score in each section of the test:

*24 for listening
*24 for reading
*27 for writing, and
*23 for speaking

If combining scores from two sittings, the following is required:

*The two exam sittings are within a 6-month period
*Both exams achieved a minimum overall score of 94
*Minimum score of 24 for Listening, 24 for Reading, 27 for Writing, 23 for Speaking across the two sittings
*For the two sittings all sections are at the minimum score or above:
20 for Listening
19 for Reading
24 for Writing
20 for Speaking

Idowu, thanks for this post. Please are other English options available in Nigeria? I mean can one sit for any of the other exams in Nigeria? How cheaper and easier are they? Please I need more information because I'm tired of sitting for this so called ielts exam

Hello Ogunyeye, so sorry for the delayed response I just stumbled on this right now. YES, PTE and TOEFL can be done right here in Nigeria. Only OET out of the 4 exams can't be done in Nigeria
