Masters degree in Nursing Canada Advice by invincible : September 06, 2015, 12:18:47 PM
Good day and happy Sunday.

Please I'm interested in pursuing master of science in nursing Canada but it seems one has to be a Registered Nurse in Canada before one can enrol in masters of nursing in Canada. I have done ielts twice before in an attempt to register as a nurse in Ontario but I didn't make the mandatory 7 in all bands in two attempts and I'm not ready to attempt it again.

I discover that most of the school websites I visited accepts ielts band score of 6.5 with no band less than 6 and I can conveniently meet that.

Do you know any school in Canada that accepts international students without having to register in Canada?

Invincible, you can search through all the universities in Canada using this website www.universitystudy.ca/search-programs/ and look up each school requirements. There are universities that accept international students for their masters program directly without the need to apply for registration with the Nursing board.

UPDATE: Here is the list of all the universities offering masters in nursing in Canada www.universitystudy.ca/search-programs/?k=nursing+&program_level_merged=Master%27s+degree&program_language=ENGLISH go through each school and look at the requirements and compare them in order to make a decision.

Hope you are aware that the required CGPA is usually 3.0 which is 3.75 in Nigeria since Canada universities use 4 scale grading scale but we use 5 in Nigeria.

Best of luck

WOW! Thanks so much Idowu for this piece especially the website, I have spent days googling but you just have all the universities in one link.

Are you sure about the CGPA of a thing? Thought 3.0 is 3.0 everywhere? I have 3.5 which is not up to 3.0 in Canada according to you, does that mean I can't be accepted into masters program in any Canadian University?

Also someone told me I can easily gain admission into 6 months caregiver or psw program and after I complete it I can secure a job and then apply for my permanent residence permit, what is your advice on this?

On the cgpa issue, USA and Canadian schools use 4 point grading scale that I'm sure of and 3 out of 4 is and will never be the same with 3 out of 5. That's why most schools will tell you that the minimum cgpa for admission is 75%. 75% of 4 is 3 and 75% of 5 is 3.75. I'm not saying you can't get admission into masters program in Canada with your cgpa just contact the school you are interested in and discuss with them before you apply.

On your second question I think the choice is yours but you need to get the right information from those who have already passed through the system rather than listen to hearsays but unfortunately i don't have much knowledge on that neither do I have someone I can refer you to.

Have you considered the immigration issue? Are you going to apply with your O level or your university degree? Psw or live in care givers are just like ward orderlies and do you think visa will be granted to someone who is already a graduate registered nurse in Nigeria and want to spend millions of naira to study "ward orderlies"  in Canada? That's a red flag for your visa to be denied sir/ma except you want to apply only with your O level results.

On permanent residence, read the Canadian immigration website to read more on it. What I saw from the websites are:

* If you study ANY Course that is LESS THAN 8 months in Canada, you will not qualify for a post study work visa
*If you study for 8 months and above in approved institutions in Canada, you will be issued post study work visa of not more than the duration of your study e.g if you study for 1year,you will be given one year post study wok visa.
*if you study for 2 and above years, you will be given 3years post study work visa
You or your spouse need to work in Canada for like 2yrs before you can be granted permanent residence check out www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-postgrad-who.asp

Why not consider postgraduate certificate program if you are not qualified for masters instead of psw or caregiver program. Visit here for list of universities offering postgraduate nursing certificate www.universitystudy.ca/search-programs/?k=nursing+&program_level_merged=Graduate+level+certificate%2Fdiploma&program_language=ENGLISH

Thanks so much, you are indeed a blessing to nursing profession @Idowu. I have worked extensively on your last post and discovered all to be true. I have decided to go for the postgraduate certificate Course and Someone suggested Omni college omnicollege.com and I called the school. The school total package is $17,450 for postgraduate certificate Course while it charges like $15,000 for the RN review course (because I meet the IELTS requirement). Which would you advise I go for between postgraduate certificate or RN review?

Well the choice is actually yours. You need to weigh your options carefully and compare schools. For instance Conestoga(see this link  www.conestogac.on.ca/fulltime/1312.jsp#international-fees-link)  offers same course for less than $14,000 thus saving you more than $3,500 compared to what Omni is offering. Going for programs in government colleges/universities I think is better than private ones. Just decide on what you want and go for it, remember that it's your money that is involved.

Here are the schools with low tuition for international students in Canada but I'm not sure whether they all run nursing program just check their websites. I also want to say that you can get admission directly into masters of nursing degree if your 400 and 500 levels grade are above 3.75 even if your total cgpa is below that because those two years are important years when you do advanced courses.

1. Memorial University of Newfoundland Tuition $13,705

2. University of Prince Edward Island Master Programs: $6,428 but this school only accept those who were either registered as a nurse in that region or those qualified to be registered so ielts score requirement is a minimum of 7 in each band

3. Acadia University Master Programs: $10,546

4. Mount Saint Vincent University Master Programs: 12,131

5. Brandon University Master Programs: $7,485

6.Concordia University College of Alberta Master Programs: $6,100

7. York University Master Programs: $7,515

8. Saint Paul University Location: Ottawa, Ontario Canada Master Programs: $11,791

9. . Saint Mary’s University Master programs: $12,000 to $15,000

10. McMaster University Master Programs: $13,278
