The professor in clinical nursing research has been awarded the International Nurse Researchers Hall of Fame Award from the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

“Each of these hall of fame honorees represents a lifetime of contribution to the nursing profession” Beth Baldwin Tigges

He will be among 20 nurse researchers inducted into the “hall of fame” at Sigma’s International Nursing Research Congress in Melbourne, Australia, during July.

Professor Ersser is the only UK representative among the inductees, who also include nurse researchers from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and the US.

He is also only the fourth UK nurse researcher to be given the award, which was created in 2010. It is the highest international research award for the nursing profession and it will make Professor Ersser one of a small group of nurses recognised worldwide.

Following the induction, Sigma will have recognised 156 nurse researchers from 13 countries with hall of fame award. It is intended to recognise researchers who have achieved “significant and sustained national or international recognition and whose research has improved the profession and the people it serves”.

Founded in 1922, Sigma is a not-for-profit organisation that describes its mission as “advancing world health and celebrating nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service”. It has more than 135,000 active members in over 90 countries and territories, including the UK.

Sigma president Beth Baldwin Tigges said: “Each of these hall of fame honorees represents a lifetime of contribution to the nursing profession.

“I am proud to add my congratulations to each of them for this monumental achievement, and I look forward to learning more about their work during our conversation in Melbourne this July,” he said.

Professor Ersser, who is also interim deputy head of the nursing and midwifery department at York, has been engaged in research for over 30 years.

He is credited with being a pioneer in the field of dermatological nursing and the application of evidence to improve skin care internationally.
