New Zealand : Nurse killed in WW1 incident remembered by Idowu Olabode : October 23, 2015, 06:25:41 PM
A Cardrona nurse who drowned when the transport ship Marquette was torpedoed by a German submarine 100 years ago was remembered at a vigil in Lake Hawea last night.
Sister Catherine Anne Fox was one of 10 New Zealand nurses who drowned when the ship, which was carrying troops and ammunition, was sunk in the Aegean Sea on October 23, 1915.

Sister Catherine was one of two nurses from Otago to be killed.

Hawea District Anzac Committee member John Taylor said the vigil for Sister Catherine would probably be the first of 13 vigils to be held at the Lake Hawea Anzac memorial on the 100th anniversary of the deaths of people from the area who had been killed as a result of war.

While all deaths during war were tragic, the death of Sister Catherine was particularly sad, Mr Taylor said.

''Every time I read her story I get a few tears.

''You can't help it. It shouldn't have happened.''

Sister Catherine had enlisted as a volunteer nurse at the beginning of the war, he said.

Committee member Doug Brenssell said committee members had spent the past two weeks organising the vigil to remember Sister Catherine.

Researching the life of the Cardrona nurse had been ''an absolute privilege''.
