Wrong Brain Surgery Patient in Kenya: Nigerian Nurses Divided on Who to Blame by katty : March 04, 2018, 06:13:00 PM
"This is the only profession i see, that they derive joy from criticizing themselves first whenever something goes wrong" - Nurse Oloye

Nigerian Nurses have reacted to the recent breaking news where doctors in kenya performed brain surgery on the wrong patient. The mistake was greeted with protests over a string of scandals at the hospital including allegations of staff sexually assaulting patients and the theft of a baby

The scandal prompted an outpouring of viewpoints on social media on who is actually to blame. The hospital said the surgeon as well as two nurses and an anaesthetist had been suspended pening an investigation into the operation but nurses in nigeria are divided on who exactly is to blame for the error

Nurse Yusuf opined that surgeons must have gone to review the patient within 48hours, if the surgeon made the mistake, the peri op nurses shouldnt have made similar mistake accepting the patient from the ward. He also blamed the anaesthetist who had gone to carryout his pre anaesthetic review and the nurses in the ward for sending the wrong patient despite the fact that a booking list was sent earlier prior to surgery date. He concluded that the following categories of health workers need to be suspended for medical negligence - matron and nurses i/c of the ward, the periop nurses, the anaesthetists, the surgeons and the house officers

His suggestion was seconded by Nurse Usman who confirmed that the blame should be on the periop nurse who work at the red line, circulatory nurse or the scrub nurse for not correcting the surgeon. According to him, it is the duty of the reception nurse to identify the patient by name, know the diagnosis, the type of surgery to be done, the names of the surgeons to carryout the surgery

This viewpoints were not taken down well by others who critised them for laying blame on fellow colleagues. Nurse Anurry responded 'Everything is the duty of the nurse!! Who booked the patient for surgery? Was the booking done online, that the doctor did not recognize his booked patients???????? Pls, let the surgeon answer for himself and leave nurses out of this.We should also learn to protect our colleagues instead of being the first to criticize them.

Nurse Oloye also added that 'This is the only profession i see, that they derive joy from criticizing themselves first whenever something went wrong. Nonsense

Who do you think should be really blamed for this error, kindly leave your comments using the reply button below
