Union criticises KMTC for allowing students to work as nurses’ strike go on by Idowu Olabode : July 07, 2017, 06:54:32 AM
The Kenya National Union of Nurses yesterday threatened the Kenya Medical Training College for allowing students to work in health facilities while nurses are on strike.

Acting secretary general Maurice Opetu  said they will take disciplinary action against institutions such as the Nyeri campus for allowing their students to work at the Nyeri Referral Hospital, saying this is endangering the lives of many people. The nurses strike started on June 5.

Opetu spoke during a meeting with the striking nurses at the Grand Batian Hotel in Nyeri town.

He said the union will not take the matter lightly and will move to scrap the Service Charter of the institution.

Opetu said it is risky for students to work in the absence of nurses, since they are not qualified. “The students should stop working immediately,” he said.

Others present were KNUN acting national chairman Joseph Ngwasi, national treasurer Agnes Munderu, acting deputy secretary general Henry Adolwa and Nyeri secretary general Beatrice Nduati.

They insisted they will not resume work, even if it means until “Jesus comes back”. “We shall not resume job until our CBA is signed, registered in court and implemented,” Ngwasi said.

Munderu said their strike, which has paralysed operations in public health facilities, is legal since nobody has gone to court to stop it. The union officials said they will vote for anybody who will address their issues on August 8.
