Sri Lanka Plans To Increase Nursing Staff To 50,000, Set Up Faculty Of Nursing by katty : April 10, 2017, 10:34:56 PM
Sri Lanka's Minister of Health, Nutrition, and Indigenous Medicine Dr. Rajitha Senaratne says the shortages of nurses in the country is an obstacle to achieve a quality health service and therefore measures will be taken to increase the number of nurses up to 50,000 and enhance the human resources of the health sector.

Participating in a ceremony held at the President's House today to distribute appointment letters to 1,300 nurses, the Minister pointed out that there are about 6,000 vacancies in the health sector yet to be filled.

The Minister announced that to provide a quality nursing education a faculty of nursing will be setup at the Sri Jayewardenepura hospital in collaboration with the Colombo University at a cost of Rs. 12.5 billion. The foundation stone for this faculty will be laid in May this year.

Overtime allowance of the nurses has been increased by the government in line with the salary increase given to them since January last year. Therefore, they will have a good salary from this month.
