Rebecca White from Texas Wins $10,000 Ansell Award for Favorite Charity by Idowu Olabode : August 10, 2016, 06:06:22 PM
Ten nurses from across the country were selected as recipients of the 4th annual U.S. Ansell Cares HERO nurse service award. One of the winners, Rebecca White, BSN, RN, garnered the most of more than 35,000 votes, which earned her a $10,000 donation from Ansell to her favorite charity.

“As a mother of a child with debilitating chronic illness, I found myself called to the nursing profession, inspired by the heroes I came in contact with in the NICU nine years ago,” White, said in a news release.

Seven years later, White now works as a nurse at Texas Children’s Hospital and also volunteers in the community, according to the release.

HERO stands for heal, educate, reach, overcome. This award recognizes nurses who have made lasting impressions on their peers, patients, profession and communities.

Ansell, a designer and manufacturer of hand and arm protection solutions, will send the donation in White’s name to the Children’s Craniofacial Association, according to the release.

White said she appreciated Ansell for “promoting nursing in this extraordinary way.”

White and the other nine winners will receive a plaque, certificate and a nursing reference book of their choice. The other winners include Paolo Pentines, RN, Legacy Meridian Park Medical Center, Oregon; Veronica Vital, PhD, Chamberlain College of Nursing, Arizona;  Heather McKelvy, MS, Stanford Children’s Hospital, California; Jean Iris Foxworth, RN, National Park Medical Center, Arkansas; Paula Goff, OCN, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Illinois; Carla Khristina, RN, Sunrise Hospital, Nevada; Kim Kiser, RN, Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, North Carolina; Michele Lynch, RN, VA Hospital NWIHCS, Nebraska; and Brenda McFadden, APRN, Marathon Health/TJ Samson Community Hospital, Kentucky.
Friends, family, colleagues and patients nominated the nurses, followed by voting May 13-June 12, via Facebook, Twitter and Ansell’s website.

White helped develop a program in which nonclinical hospital executives and leaders shadow front-line nurses. “Nurses and leaders alike have shared how this has made an impact on their work, and influences their decision-making to make things better for staff, patients and families,” according to the Ansell website.

“Her story is certainly inspirational,” Anthony López, president and general manager of medical solutions, said of White in the release. “Each year we are honored to recognize deserving nurses across the country for their outstanding contributions within the medical profession, and throughout the communities where they work and live,” he said. “They are the exemplary professionals who demonstrate commitment, excellence and innovation. Indeed they are role models for all of us to follow.”
