23RD - 25TH OCTOBER, 2016 l Oshogbo

The conference like no one else brought nurses together from all sectors of the economy across the country..

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria was fully represented by the Registrar, Alh. Umar Faruk Abubakar along with the Deputy Registrar Mrs. Alheri Yusuf who also presented the keynote address on theme of the conference: NURSING EDUCATION IN CONTEMPORARY NIGERIA EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM: ISSUES AND CHALLENGES. The key issues identified were primarily those caused by the system such as the non-inclusion of nursing and midwifery schools in the National Policy on Education as a tertiary institution.

Numerous solutions were proffered which prominent among them was the movement of nursing education out of Health Ministries to Education Ministries were they can be placed as Monotechnics regulated by NBTE for award of Diplomas or the NUC for award of Degrees. Furthermore, schools can be absorbed into universities as Departments or Institutes for the award of degrees.

Several other presentations were made to include Concept of Change in Nursing; Nurses and Politics; and Statutory Dispute Resolution Mechanism in Nigeria among other clinical and non-clinical presentations.

There were other side attractions which include a cultural night and buying and selling for those who are are not adversely affected by the recession in the country.

Importantly all participants were reminded that as nurses practicing in Nigeria they occupied very strategic position in the health and national development but the position is also sympathetic.

We covet the prayers and support of all and sundry for a better nursing education and practice which will imply a better healthcare industry and a better nation.

Ultimately, it was evident that the better days are here and now is the time.

Great Nurses!
