Kidney transplants will soon be carried out daily. A programme by the government and the Kenya Renal Association will be rolled out before the end of the year.

It will reduce the cost of treatment. Many Kenyans seek treatment overseas. A working group will meet next month to develop guidelines on identifying patients and how to run the programme, including the costs. Health PS Nicholas Muraguri said the transplants will be carried out at KNH, Moi Referral and select private hospitals.

“We carry out 20 to 30 transplants annually at KNH,” he said in a press statement on Tuesday. It is estimated that 10,000 Kenyans are in need of dialysis, but only 1,500 have enrolled for treatment.
