A Baltimore nurse who was at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport at the time of a mass shooting Friday afternoon described feeling terrified.

Officials say a man flew to the Florida airport, pulled out a gun from a checked bag and began shooting in a baggage claim area. The gunman was taken into custody after five people were killed and as many as eight people were injured.

Angela Long, a nurse practitioner from Baltimore had just arrived at the airport from a cruise with her boyfriend and was anticipating flying back home. They arrived around 12:45 p.m., almost the exact time that the shooting began.

"I'm shaking, like my heart is throbbing. I texted my children right away, I told my children I loved them. I was scared we were not going to get out of there. I have never felt that feeling in my life, just panic, mass panic, nowhere to hide, nowhere to go," Long said.

Long described the scene at the airport as very fluid and she had no idea when she will return home.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, flights were not arriving or departing from Fort Lauderdale, and several flights were diverted to other South Florida airports. The FAA put in a ground stop for flights across the country that were destined to Fort Lauderdale.
