Delta State Nurses Protest Against Continuation Of Volunteers Scheme by katty : June 27, 2018, 04:33:46 PM
Delta State Nurses yesterday organized a peaceful demonstration against the running Volunteers scheme in the state. The Nurses in their numbers trooped out carrying placards which read:
*Say No; No To Injustice In Nursing Profession
*The Sponsors And Supporters Of the Volunteers Nurses Scheme Are Our Enemies
* Employ Nurses; No More Volunteers In Nursing Practice
*We Say No To Functional (??????) Assistant Director Of Nursing (ADNS)
* Employ The Existing Volunteer Nurses

Amongst others.
As part of its ACTIVITIES/ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH UNDER SENATOR (DR.) IFEANYI OKOWA LED ADMINISTRATION, the Delta State Ministry of Health on its website states that as part of its Hospitals Management Board (HMB) acheivement it had recruited about 150 volunteer Nurses.

A nurse spoken to at the protest march decried this scheme saying: "It's now a norm, the is now officially mode of entry. Nurses volunteer while other health workers pass through the normal employment process, the next thing you will hear is from officials is you don't know how it started, they just give unnecessary excuses. Well they have finally forced Young Nurses in Delta State to carry placards. Maybe that will make them do the needful.
Another said: NANNM National should please help intervene if the state NANNM can't handle it alone because it's disheartening to continue to see this trend and this will come to stay if nothing is done. While others are gainfully employed after school, Delta state Nurses will be lobbying for voluntary work. Everybody knows what is happening, to become a Government employee Nurse, you first work as volunteer for Government. It's appalling, apart from Delsuth, there has been no employment of Nurses in Delta state for aeons now. If any was done, then it must have been through the back door. I experienced it first hand when my dad was admitted last year. Just a Nurse on night duty. While you will may be lucky to see two or three Nurses on morning duty. What do you call that?
A few months back an official who works with the Delta State Government when contactacted and asked about the complaints about the this Volunteers said: "Delta state govt never forced anybody to take an appointment letter, Delta state government under this present administration has not employed and any nurse doing any voluntary service was never forced to do so. The government never asked them to work on a voluntary basis."
The nurses who took part in the protest said they have given the State Government a 21 day ultimatum to redress the situation or they would mobilise once more if not responded to properly.
