Dedicated midwives will see women through pregnancy and birth in UK by katty : April 10, 2018, 02:57:52 PM
Pregnant women are to be given a dedicated midwife that will see them right through to the birth of their child, Jeremy Hunt has announced.

The health and social care secretary has pledged that every expectant mother will have a specific midwife assigned to them by 2021.

At present, it is just chance as to whether women see the same midwife at some of their appointments, meaning there could be an entirely different member of staff at all nine or ten consultations.

Then, there is often someone they have never met before attending to them when they give birth.

Mr Hunt hopes that the improvement to continuity of care will reduce the number of stillbirths, miscarriages and neonatal deaths in the UK.

He said: “There are few moments in life that matter more than the birth of a child, so the next step in my mission to transform safety standards is a drive to give mums dedicated midwives who can get to know them personally and oversee their whole journey from pregnancy to labour to new parent.”

Seeing different midwives throughout pregnancy, labour and birth is not the only problem with maternity care at the moment, as there is a large shortage of personnel in the profession.

The government is aiming to train an additional 3,000 midwives over the next four years and has announced that it will facilitate a 25 per cent increase in the next 12 months alone.
