23 year old Australian Student Nurse with Cancer Want to become Oncology Nurse by katty : March 13, 2018, 04:33:34 PM
Georgia McLennan was a healthy 23-year-old when a shock scan last year revealed her body was riddled with cancer.

While doctors first thought the nursing student, from Broadbeach on the Gold Coast, may not make it through the weekend, she has beaten the disease and now wants to help others.

Ms McLennan began to feel stabbing pains on New Year’s Eve, which led to three months of continuous aches.

Following multiple trips to local GPs, a PET scan last May revealed her body had become riddled with tumours.

“They thought I was going to die before the result of the biopsy came back,” Ms McLennan told 9NEWS.

“I knew it was really bad because it was so spread out.

“I was just in shock … I couldn’t believe it could happen to me.”

Ms McLennan was diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma – an aggressive form of cancer that causes rapidly enlarging tumours in a person’s chest or abdomen.

It has a high tendency to spread through the central nervous system, to the brain and spine.

She underwent three months of daily chemotherapy as well as spinal injections.

“I guess I just felt really lucky that I was having the treatment and that I have access to treatment,” Ms McLennan said.

The nursing student is now in remission and wants to become an oncology nurse.

“I feel like I can be there for people, I can understand what they’re going through,” she said.

She hopes sharing her story will help to raise vital funds for the Gold Coast University Hospital Foundation at their Care for Cancer lunch this Friday.

“It’s just amazing that they’re supporting people with cancer in such a way … that’s really valuable,” she said.
