1600 applicants write exams for 100 seats in Oyo College of Nursing by Idowu Olabode : July 01, 2015, 07:04:23 AM
Dr Olayemisi Iyiola, Permanent Secretary, Oyo State Ministry of Health, on Saturday said 1,600 applicants wrote the entrance examination into Oyo State College of Nursing and Midwifery.

Iyiola, whose ministry oversees the college, disclosed this while monitoring the entrance examination which took place at the college premises in Ibadan.

“What is happening today is an exercise that will enable the college take in students forthe 2015 and 2016 academic session,” he said.

He said out of this number, only 100 students would be finally offered admission in line with Nursing and Midwifery Regulations Council.“

Former School of Nursing and Midwifery was upgraded to a degree awarding institution by the Governor Abiola Ajimobi administration towards the end of its last tenure.

“The college will now have recognition as an institution that awards diplomas and degrees and by 2020, it will become a full fledged degree awarding institution.

“The purpose of upgrading the school to a college was to make sure that nursing profession was evenly spread among citizens of Oyo state,” he said.

Iyiola said a lot of physical development is going on at the site; a standard library is already being constructed, while facilities are being upgraded to meet standards of the new college. He said a satellite campus was being put in place at Kisi, in Oyo North Area, adding that this would afford an even spread of nursing education inthe state.

The permanent secretary said between now and December, application would be taken from interested students and by March 2016, new students would be admitted into the college.

He expressed appreciation to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Council (JAMB), Oyo State office, for assisting the ministry and the college for setting the entrance examination questions.
