|REGISTRATION OF FOREIGN TRAINED NURSES IN NIGERIA by Idowu Olabode : May 20, 2015, 02:06:37 PM|
It is mandatory that graduates of foreign nursing schools register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and obtain licence to practice prior to their professional practice in Nigeria. This process may take a minimum of 6 months and maximum of 18months.
Facilitation of d registration and licensing process can be done by taking d following steps, soon after your arrival in Nigeria. The following process is what is listed on the website of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria:
Applicants licensed in country of training.
1. Original Teller of Payment of non-refundable application fee of N6,000.00 into Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria account (See how to make payment into Council TSA account http://nursesarena.com/mcpdp/nursing-council-new-account-number/)
2 Complete registration/licencing application forms with five (5) passport photographs on a white background.
3 Complete verification of registration/licensure form and send same to foreign Nurses' Registration Board/Authority who will in turn send it directly to the Nursing & Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
*Please collect the form from Registration Officers at any NMCN office.It is applicant's responsibility to ensure that verification are completed and returned in good time to the Nursing & Midwifery Council of Nigeria.*
4. Also request your foreign Nursing Registration Board/Authority to send a letter of good standing directly to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
5 . Request foreign institution(s) to send official academic transcripts of all nursing courses directly to the Nursing & Midwifery Council of Nigeria.It is the applicant's responsibility to arrange and pay all necessary transcripts fees as may be required by the foreign University/College.
6 Sit a pre-registration Nursing & Midwifery Council of Nigeria's Examination.Date and time of the examination will be communicated to applicant in due Course.Only successful applicant will proceed to steps
7 Undergo a minimum of 3 months orientation Programme in an approved institution.Applicants will be advised appropriately in due course.Obtain end of orientation Report.
8 Payment of Council's prescribed fee for registration.
9 Schedule officer enters the relevant details of the applicant into the appropriate register and assign registration number (same as in basic or postbasic).
Applicants NOT licensed in the Country of Training.
1 Original Teller of Payment of non-refundable application fee of N6,000.00 into Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria account .
2 Complete registration/licencing application forms with five (5) identical coloured passport photographs with white background.
3 Request foreign training institution(s) to send official academic transcripts of all nursingcourses directly to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
4 Undergo a minimum of one (1) year training in an accredited Nursing training institution in Nigeria (period of training is determined after evaluation of the academic transcript).
5 Sit Council's final qualifying examination.
6 Payment of Council's prescribed fees for registration, if successful in the Council's examination.
7 Schedule officer enters the relevant details in the result list and the appropriate Register and assign Registration number.
8 Applicant is issued the notification of registration.

Steps taken by a foreign trained Nurse before she was registered last year:
1. She obtained the form @NMCN office in Yaba(she is closer to Lagos), filled and submitted with passport photogrphs and pay the required fees (Note that you have to authenticate your certificate before you proceed. Check below for the authentication procedure )
2. Her transcript was sent directly from her school to NMCN office in Yaba and she confirmed it before it was forwarded to NMCN office in Abuja
3 . She was called for both written and practical exams in Abuja. If you pass the exam,you will proceed to 3 months adaptation course but if you fail,you will be required to undertake a 6months-1year training before you will be allowed to retake the exam
HOW TO AUTHENTICATE YOUR FOREIGN NURSING DEGREE IN NIGERIA
The Federal Ministry of education is responsible for authenticating foreign degrees for Nursing registration and participation in NYSC scheme.
For NMCN registration,you will need to write a letter to FME for your certificate to be recognized. You write a request letter asking them to authenticate your institution in order to be able to process ur licence and you will have to attach a copy of your certificate If your school is on the list of school that the ministry have on it list, your certificate will be endorsed immediately and a certification letter will be given to you.
If your school is not on the list, the ministry will write to the ministry of education in d country where you graduated from to confirm the accreditation status of the said institution.
The letter should be addressed to the honorable minister of education and you will have to submit it by hand.

Is at the Secretariat Just take a cab and tell the cab man that you are going to secretariat When you get there, ask of ministry of education from where you will directed to appropriate office

Please can anyone tell me how to check online if your university /college abroad is recognized in NigeriaI don't think it's possible cos neither the Federal Ministry of Education nor any of it parastaltals has the information on it website. Here is FME's website http://www.education.gov.ng
